How motion hardware is evaluated for a solar orientation retrofit.
Start with required motion
Determine the panel assembly’s travel range, speed, loading and available installation space before selecting a motor.
Actuation choices
Geared DC motors, steppers and screw-driven mechanisms have different trade-offs. Torque, back-drive behavior, mechanical advantage and weather sealing all matter.
Feedback
Position measurements may use encoders, potentiometers or linear displacement sensors. End-of-travel switches and separate safety limits are important.
Reliability
A proof-of-concept movement test is only one step. Life-cycle, power-failure behavior, corrosion resistance and service access also need evaluation.
Educational information only. The suitability and safety of a retrofit depend on a site-specific engineering review.
