Understanding the mechanical trade-offs between one-axis and two-axis solar orientation.
Single-axis tracking
A single-axis design rotates the assembly about one controlled axis. It can be mechanically simpler but it does not independently optimize both tilt and azimuth.
Dual-axis tracking
Two independent degrees of freedom can follow the sun more directly. The extra joints, actuators and sensors increase mechanical complexity and potential maintenance requirements.
What determines suitability
Rooftop access, wind loading, support spacing, permitted movement envelope, row shading and existing cable slack matter as much as the controller algorithm.
Decision framework
Start with a measured site survey and basic layout. Decide which motion provides the strongest practical improvement without compromising roof or structure safety.
Educational information only. The suitability and safety of a retrofit depend on a site-specific engineering review.
