A practical introduction to tracking, light capture and the difference between motion and energy yield.
Why orientation matters
Solar modules produce electricity from incident sunlight. Their output depends on irradiance, shading, temperature, soiling and electrical operating conditions. Changing a panel’s orientation can increase exposure at some times of the day, but more light does not automatically mean a particular annual gain.
Fixed versus moving modules
Fixed installations have a selected tilt and azimuth. Tracking systems adjust one or more angles over time. A single-axis design moves around one rotation axis; a dual-axis design controls both tilt and azimuth.
Retrofit engineering
An existing array has clamps, rails, structural supports, wiring and inverter arrangements that must be evaluated before motion is introduced. Retrofitting a motion mechanism should begin with a site survey, load calculations and a defined safety design.
Measuring value
Compare energy measurements over representative conditions and account for added parasitic motor consumption, maintenance and mechanical losses. Any improvement estimate should be site-specific.
Educational information only. The suitability and safety of a retrofit depend on a site-specific engineering review.
